It All Started with a Dream in 1987…
Frank and Nadge Herceg, and Lee Smelko wanted a new experience for their children. The journey began with the forming of “Handi-Camp” sponsored by the Avon Lake United Church of Christ. The first year the camp had eleven students and the goal was to reach 20 students in by 1997.
The goal was reached and the door was opened to the Sheffield Lake City Schools and Avon Schools. The next part of the journey was to implement a curriculum focused on the IEP goals. Handi-Camp was no longer just a recreational camp, it combined educational, social and practical skills all in one. With new century came new dreams and the need to expand.
The dream became a reality and today we service ninety plus students from twelve different school districts. But, the journey does not end here! With your help we can continue to Imagine a world that is not defined by the disability, together we can carve ‘dis’ out of disability! This is our moment! This is our collective journey!
